F&L and VINATUNA organize another fishermen training workshop in Phu Yen


As part of the Vietnam Yellowfin FIP program, the Fishing & Living Program together with the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA) organized a training workshop for local tuna fishermen in two ports of  Tuy Hoa city, in the central province of Phu Yen on December 16th , 2018. The training was attended by more than 40 tuna fishermen and aimed socialize the New Fishery Law of Vietnam (Fishery Law No.18/2017/QH14) which will become effective on January 1st, 2019.

The training workshop presented the new requirements on Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) for offshore fishing vessel fleets according to which all vessels longer than 15 meters vessel have to install VMS & tracking devices prior to 30th June, 2019. These fishing vessels will have to report their location every 2 hours.

Moreover, attending fishermen were trained on how to rescue & protect Endangered – Threaten and Protected species (ETPs). The Fishing & Living program and VINATUNA also gave away free ETP protection tool kits and information material such as handbooks, new school-calendar 2019, posters and circle hooks as a gift to local fishers in Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen province.

At the end of the training, local tuna fishers in Phu Yen were aware of basic requirements on the new fishery laws, new requirements on VMS as well and how to protect ETP species.
